ARTSPACE impresses visitors

THE events to celebrate 20 years of Henley’s annual art exhibition, ARTSPACE, continued this week.

On Wednesday night an audience of about 40 poetry lovers enjoyed an evening of readings in the Barn by the Free Range Poets of Barn Galleries along with two award winning guest poets, Susan Utting and Wendy Klein.

On Monday, an enthusiastic group of painters had the unique opportunity to spend a day painting alongside the well-known landscape artist, David Morgan, pictured left, who travelled from Devon to tutor the workshop.

“There was some great work produced,” says David. “Being encouraged to paint in a new style produced some really fresh work. After all that ARTSPACE has done for me and all it means to me, I really wanted to offer something to mark its 20 years.”

On Tuesday night Mitu Mukherjee, director of the sister project ARTSPACE INDIA, flew in from Kolkata. “I couldn’t miss ARTSPACE 2010. It is magnificent and such a treat and an inspiration to see all this wonderful work. I shall be taking lots of ideas back to ARTSPACE INDIA. The variety of ceramics here, in particular, is quite breath-taking,” he said.

Artists, writers, musicians, dancers as well as visual artists from all over the world spend time at ARTSPACE INDIA. Anyone interested should contact Barn Galleries.

ARTSPACE ends on Bank Holiday Monday, May 31. It is open every day from 10am to 5pm with sculpture, paintings, ceramics, jewellery, glass, metalwork and much more by over 80 professional artists all in the tranquil setting of Barn Galleries, Aston. You can even enjoy tea and home made cakes while you decide what to buy

'Remembering Bobby' Memorial Exhibition

A Tribute by the Artists
At Gallery Sanskriti, Kolkata
6th- 18th February 2006

"As a young man, my husband Bobby had nurtured a dream of becoming an artist. It was a highly romanticised dream that could not take root as the reality then was very different.
He took a long look at the life of a working artist and succumbed to the comforts of corporate life.
Manida (K G Subramanian) has somewhere very perceptibly remarked "All incipient artists are like little rockets whom you can set off with a touch of fire but you cannot foresee or engineer the trajectories they will take". Bobby's fire had not died down completely and in his late life he passionately turned to making his dormant dream take on shape and substance. 'Artspace India' came into being. Unfortunately again, he did no have the time to bring it into full fruition but he had planted the seed.
'Artspace India' has a long way to go but even as it stands today, would not have been possible but for the unstinting support, love and goodwill of the entire artist fraternity. The number of artists who have contributed work to make this exhibition possible makes this amply clear. It is a collective gesture of support, encouragement and trust in the hopes that 'Artspace India' cherishes. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel at this touching kindness."

"It has been my lifetime's realisation that a human being is rich not because he possesses enormous property or wealth, but because he is endowed with good human traits or virtues.
I had no way of knowing whether Bobby believed in God or not. But I have no doubt that he believed in true humanism. By which I mean love and respect for all, irrespective of his or her position or status in society. The high and the low were equal in his eyes. This was not only my own knowledge or experience of Bobby, but also of many others who knew him well.
Bobby was a man of diverse interests in life. His great passion was painting and sculpture. The artists he came to know were held in profound respect and love. I happened to be one of those who felt the closeness and warmth of his heart, and felt proud of his friendship.
A man born with a fearless mind, a perpetually jovial spirit and an abundance of energy, his activities were manifold both in his public and private life. Bobby loved to dream. Dear to his heart was one which he translated into reality before he left this world- a 'home' for the artists adjoining his farmhouse where artists could live and work in a peaceful environment, surrounded by trees, flowering plants and chirping birds. Not only painters and sculptors, but musicians, dancers, theatre personalities are equally welcome to this abode of the arts.
This was Bobby's most favourite expression of his passionate love for the arts and artists. It was also an expression of joy.

Like many of his other admirers, i feel immensely happy to share this joy with him because I am reminded of his presence all the time. An indomitable spirit, with love and respect for fellow beings, a very kind soul and a heart full of laughter-
who can ever forgot Bobby!"
